Vibrio cholerae is a comma-shaped bacterium (curved bacillus) that likes to live in fresh or brackish water (lakes, rivers, etc.) in warm regions of the globe. Equipped with a long flagellum, it is a real competitive swimmer ! But be careful: when it enters our bodies, it is to cause the infamous... cholera.

Cholera is a very diarrheal intestinal infection, transmitted by contaminated water or food, often where access to drinking water and sanitation is limited.

Once ingested, V. cholerae settles in the small intestine and releases its famous cholera toxin. The result? The intestinal cells lose control and release massive amounts of water and electrolytes into the stool. This results in intense watery diarrhea, leading to severe dehydration... sometimes fatal without prompt treatment !

The key is rapid rehydration (oral or IV)! And in case of an outbreak or severe symptoms, antibiotics can also be used. Prevention requires clean water, good food hygiene, and adequate sanitation.

Its impressive mobility doesn't stop there: Vibrio cholerae can also stylishly stick to your computers, bottles, notebooks or tablets... in sticker form, of course ! πŸ˜„ Add this bouncing bacillus to your collection now!
