Umbriel

Umbriel, one of Uranus's largest moons, is a true frozen enigma that looks like it came straight out of a science fiction film. Unlike the other, brighter moons, Umbriel is profoundly black, as its surface is covered in dark materials left over from billions of years of impacts and interplanetary dust. It is the darkest moon in the Uranian system !

Composed of a mixture of water ice and rock, it could even conceal a subterranean ocean, still hypothetical, beneath its icy crust. Its surface is marked by very ancient craters, several of which exceed 200 km, bearing witness to a violent history frozen in time.

But Umbriel also hides a surprise: a strange light ring nicknamed “the Cap of Umbriel”, a bright structure placed in the middle of so much darkness, as if someone had left a bright spot in a world of shadow.
