Trypanosoma brucei is a spiral-shaped, single-celled parasite that lives in the blood and lymph of humans and some animals. It is responsible for African trypanosomiasis, also known as sleeping sickness, and is primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected tsetse fly, found in parts of sub-Saharan Africa.

The first symptoms usually appear a few days to weeks after the bite and resemble a mild flu, with fever, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. If left untreated, the infection progresses and reaches the central nervous system, causing sleep disturbances, confusion, behavioral changes, impaired coordination, and even coma. The disease can be fatal if left untreated.

Fortunately, effective antiparasitic treatments exist, tailored to the stage of the disease. Prevention relies on protection against tsetse fly bites by wearing protective clothing, using repellents, and avoiding areas with high fly densities.

Trypanosoma brucei is a fascinating and formidable parasite that perfectly illustrates the complexity of the microscopic world. You can now add the Trypanosoma brucei science sticker to your collection and explore the incredible universe of parasites!
