Streptococcus viridans is a spherical bacterium (coccus) that clusters in small chains (strepto), like the beads of a microscopic necklace. Its name comes from the Latin viridis (meaning “green”), because of the greenish coloration it leaves behind on culture media. Not bad for a bacterium that knows how to stand out in the lab!
It is often found in the mouth, pharynx, digestive system and even sometimes in the genital tract . In general, it coexists peacefully with us… until it decides to travel where it shouldn’t. 😬
🚨 If it enters the bloodstream, the trouble begins:
– Infective endocarditis (infection of the heart valves), especially after dental treatment in people at risk
– Bacteremia (bacteria in the blood)
– Brain abscesses, intra-abdominal infections, dental caries, etc.
Compared to its streptococcal cousins, S. viridans is less virulent and rather discreet, but also extremely persistent. Fortunately, it is often sensitive to penicillin or amoxicillin, and treatment works well, although it can be lengthy (especially in cases of endocarditis). For those at risk, antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended before dental care to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
