Streptococcus pneumoniae, also known as pneumococcus, lives peacefully in the nose and throat of many people without making any waves... But be careful: when the immune system weakens, this bacteria can change course and become a real danger ! 😷
🔬 Round in shape, often in pairs (diplococci) or small chains, S. pneumoniae can cause a range of diseases:
– Pneumonia (lung infection)
– Middle ear infections (very common in children)
– Sinusitis
– Bacterial meningitis
– And even septicemia (blood infections)!
All this is possible thanks to its array of molecular weapons : several toxins and, above all, a protective capsule that helps it evade the immune system ! There are more than 90 different types, some more virulent than others. In addition, some strains are resistant to antibiotics, making treatment more complex...
💉 Fortunately, we have solutions:
– Effective vaccines to prevent infection
– Targeted antibiotics, depending on the strain
– And good hygiene + rapid treatment of respiratory infections to limit the spread!
If you like microbes that are both discreet and formidable, Streptococcus pneumoniae is the perfect candidate for your collection. Available now as a sticker in our shop!
