Staphylococcus aureus is a bacteria that is often carried naturally on the skin, in the nostrils, throat or even armpits. Generally harmless, it can however become a real problem if it manages to enter the body via a wound, a catheter or an injection!
When it settles in the wrong place, S. aureus can cause a wide range of infections: skin, respiratory, bone and joint, or even serious blood infections! It can also produce toxins in poorly stored food, causing impressive (and unpleasant...) food poisoning.
๐ฌ Its shape? A round shell, organized into clusters (Staphylo). In the lab, it forms golden colonies on culture media, which gives it its pretty name "aureus" ๐
But be careful, she also has more than one trick up her sleeve:
โ It forms solid biofilms on surfaces such as prostheses or catheters
โ It can resist several antibiotics, notably its famous version: MRSA (methicillin resistant)
๐ก๏ธ On the defence side? It can be treated with antibiotics, but some strains are resistant! This is why prevention is essential: hand washing, wound disinfection, and strict measures in hospitals.
๐ก Despite its bad reputation, S. aureus is also a star in scientific research ! It serves as a model for:
โ Understanding antibiotic resistance
โ Study the formation of biofilms and toxins
โ Develop new treatments (vaccines, antibodies, antimicrobial molecules)
โ And even explore its role in the skin microbiota !
๐ So why not invite it to decorate your laptop or notebook? In sticker form, Staphylococcus aureus is harmless, shiny... and available now in our store!
