Elegant and majestic, Saturn is undoubtedly the most iconic planet in the Solar System. This gas giant is composed mainly of hydrogen and helium, similar to Jupiter, but is distinguished by its spectacular rings, a gigantic system formed of ice, dust and rocky fragments that extend over 280,000 kilometers, while remaining less than 1 kilometer thick.
Saturn rotates extremely rapidly on its axis, completing a rotation in 10.7 hours, which slightly flattens its poles and gives it its instantly recognizable shape. Its atmosphere, swept by winds reaching 1,800 km/h, reveals immense cloud bands and sometimes hexagonal storms at the north pole, a fascinating meteorological mystery that scientists are still studying today. Its composition of light gases makes Saturn less dense than water: if a sufficiently large basin were filled with water, the gas giant would float!
Around it, a veritable cosmic procession: more than 250 moons and satellites, some of which are among the most intriguing in the Solar System. Titan, the largest, has a dense atmosphere and seas of liquid methane, while Enceladus spews geysers of icy water that could conceal a subterranean ocean.
NEWS FLASH: Saturn is the equivalent of the Greek god Cronus, king of the Titans . He is the god of time . Son of Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (the Sky), he is said to have castrated his father with a sickle and reigned over the Golden Age before being dethroned by his son Zeus. He even tried to devour his own children.
Saturn is much more than a celestial jewel: it's a planet of balance and mystery, both powerful and delicate, a perfect symbol of the beauty of the cosmos. Its grandeur is breathtaking, so don't faint (but rather grab some stickers!). Speaking of which, Saturn stickers are waiting for you in our shop!
