Propionibacterium acnes (now called Cutibacterium acnes) is a well-known bacteria… especially among teenagers! Naturally present on our skin, it is part of the skin microbiota, particularly abundant in areas rich in sebaceous glands such as the face, back and chest. Normally, it coexists with us without any problem… but sometimes, it makes itself noticed.
It's an anaerobic bacterium, which means it loves places with little oxygen. It therefore happily nestles in hair follicles and sebaceous glands. When pores are clogged with excess sebum and dead cells, it's party time for P. acnes : it multiplies, releases enzymes and inflammatory substances, which attract white blood cells... Result: redness, inflammation, pus... and voilà, the pimple is born! It's not the only cause of acne, but it plays a key role.
In rarer cases, it can also appear where it is least expected: infections linked to implants or catheters, and deep infections in immunocompromised people.
Fortunately, there are ways to combat it: regular skin cleansing, topical or oral treatments, and even probiotics to balance the skin microbiota.
