Prometheus is a small, elongated moon (approximately 86 × 62 × 46 km ) composed primarily of water ice mixed with some rock, a material typical of moons near Saturn. Its surface is bright, highly reflective, and barely marked by craters. This suggests that it is geologically young, its exterior having been reshaped by the constant passage of particles from the rings.
Prometheus resembles a large, icy pebble : irregular, elongated, striated, slightly bumpy. No giant mountains or spectacular valleys, but a rough texture that testifies to millions of years spent skimming the rings like a skater on cosmic ice.
What truly makes it unique is its role: as it passes through the F ring, Prometheus attracts and repels particles around it. It creates waves, furrows, and swirling filaments , becoming one of the few celestial bodies in the Solar System that physically shapes its neighborhood. A small moon, but with immense artistic talent!
NEWS FLASH: Like Saturn's other known moons, Prometheus was a Titan from Greek mythology, son of Iapetus, best known as humanity's benefactor. He is famous for stealing fire from the gods and giving it to humans (allowing them to develop). As punishment for this act, Zeus chained him to a rock and sent an eagle, which devoured his liver every day. The hero Heracles eventually freed him.
Prometheus is proof that you don't need to be tall to leave a big mark on the Universe.
