Pluto

Small, distant, but impossible to ignore: Pluto, the most famous of the dwarf planets, continues to make the hearts of space enthusiasts beat faster.

Located nearly 6 billion kilometers from the Sun, Pluto is a world of ice and rock, where temperatures plummet to -230°C. Yet, despite this extreme cold, its surface offers a kaleidoscope of colors : from brilliant white, beige, orangey brown, and even bluish hues.

These nuances reveal Pluto's complex chemistry : the light areas are rich in nitrogen and methane ices, while the red and brown tones come from tholins, organic molecules formed when sunlight transforms the methane and nitrogen in its atmosphere. These tholins slowly cover the surface, giving it its reddish and mysterious, almost living appearance.

And then there is Tombaugh Regio, the famous heart-shaped region: a striking contrast between the dazzling whiteness of the frozen Sputnik Planitia plain and the darker areas rich in organic compounds.

This small dwarf planet has 5 moons orbiting it (more than other planets significantly larger than itself, such as Earth, Venus, and Mars!). Pluto also has a unique gravitational dance with its moon Charon : they revolve around each other like two inseparable partners, sharing a common center of gravity.

FLASH NEWS: In Roman mythology, Pluto is the god of the underworld and is also associated with subterranean riches. He is the equivalent of Hades in Greek mythology. Hades is the son of Cronus and Rhea, and the brother of Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Ceres, and Hestia. He is often portrayed as a villain in pop culture, but in reality, he is not a traditional villain in Greek mythology. He was rather seen as a god of the afterlife, responsible for maintaining balance, although he is associated with death, giving him a dark image (he is generally calmer than his brothers Zeus and Poseidon).
