Phoebe

Among Saturn's dozens of moons, Phoebe stands out as the mysterious one from elsewhere. Discovered in 1899, it orbits so far away and in the opposite direction to the other moons (a retrograde orbit) that it is thought that it was not born around Saturn, but captured from the icy outer reaches of the Solar System, probably the Kuiper Belt.

At 213 kilometers in diameter, Phoebe isn't very large, but it has a gigantic past ! Its dark, coal-black surface, riddled with craters, tells an ancient story, that of a primitive body, a witness to the era when giant planets were forming. It reflects barely 6% of the Sun's light, making it a true cosmic ghost floating in Saturn's shadow. And that's not all: the dust eroded from Phoebe forms a vast, invisible ring around the planet, one of the largest in the Solar System!

FLASH NEWS: Like the other moons of Saturn, Phoebe is one of the Titans and Titanesses of Greek mythology. She was the Titaness of light, prophecy, and later of the Moon, often associated with Artemis.
