More than 4.8 billion kilometers from the Sun, Nereid dances around Neptune like a rebellious star. This small, icy moon, discovered in 1949, doesn't follow the rules at all: its orbit is extremely elongated, the most eccentric of all the large moons in the solar system! Sometimes close to Neptune, sometimes very far away, it seems to hesitate between fleeing and returning, like a cosmic wave with a shifting heart.
Nereid was likely an asteroid from the Kuiper Belt, captured by the large blue planet. This moon is composed of rock and ice.
Its surface, probably made of ice mixed with dark rocks, barely reflects light, a mystery that remains unsolved. Some believe that Nereid is an ancient moon that was captured, torn from another world during the turbulent formation of the Neptune system.
FLASH NEWS: In Greek mythology, a Nereid is a sea nymph, one of the fifty daughters of the sea god Nereus. One of the most famous Nereids (Amphitrite) was the wife of Poseidon and therefore the queen of the sea. All of Neptune's known moons have been named after a creature, aquatic deity, or nymph from Greek and Roman mythology!
Nereid may be small, but her trajectory shows us that she is a rebel at heart! Be rebellious yourself and add this mysterious moon sticker to your collection.
