Neisseria meningitidis , also known as meningococcus, is a bacteria with two faces: on one side, a quiet roommate in our noses and throats, making no noise in some healthy carriers. On the other, it's a formidable agent capable of causing serious infections, including meningitis (inflammation of the membranes around the brain) and potentially fatal bloodstream infections.
Symptoms of meningitis (especially in children and young adults): high fever, severe headache, nausea, neck stiffness, and sensitivity to light. When in doubt, head to the hospital emergency room without delay! If the infection becomes widespread, it can cause fever, purple spots on the skin, and shock, potentially life-threatening within just a few hours.
Like its cousin Neisseria gonorrhoeae, N. meningitidis is a diplococcus (two small balls stuck together), but it has a little extra: a polysaccharide capsule that serves as a shield to escape our immune system, thus strengthening its ability to infect.
Fortunately, effective vaccines exist to protect against the virus. And to limit its transmission, remember to wash your hands and avoid sharing glasses or cutlery. In the event of contact with an infected person, preventative antibiotics can save the lives of loved ones. Emergency hospital treatment with powerful antibiotics is crucial: the faster it is administered, the better the chances of survival and recovery.
