Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the star of bacteria exclusive to humans and highly contagious, responsible for the famous gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted infection with very different symptoms in men and women.

In men, it manifests as burning during urination, thick yellowish discharge, and sometimes testicular pain. In women, often silent at first, it can cause unusual vaginal discharge, pelvic or urinary pain, and in severe cases, fallopian tube infections that can lead to infertility!

This bacterium colonizes the mucous membranes of the urethra, cervix, throat, rectum, and sometimes even the eyes. Rarely, it can infiltrate the bloodstream and cause a widespread infection. With its characteristic shape of two small, stuck-together balls (diplococcus) and its fine filaments on its surface, it clings firmly to our tissues, which boosts its virulence. Removing these filaments? The bacteria would have a much harder time infecting!

To detect it, local samples are taken and analyzed in a lab, often at the same time as for chlamydia, as these two infections are often companions. Gonorrhea can be treated with antibiotics, but beware: resistance is increasing, which worries experts. Hence the importance of combining treatments and, above all, following up-to-date medical recommendations!

In terms of prevention, using condoms, regular screening (especially in the case of multiple partners) and good information are your best allies.

Fun fact : Gonorrhea is also called the "clap", but there ain't no reason to celebrate if you catch it!
