Moraxella catarrhalis , this small bean-shaped cocci (often in pairs!) loves to take up residence in the nose, throat and respiratory tract (especially in young children). Most of the time, it keeps a low profile… But be careful, if the immune system is weakened or after a cold or flu, it can take advantage of the situation to multiply and cause ear infections, sinusitis, bronchitis and sometimes even pneumonia !
And that's not all: M. catarrhalis is equipped with a special enzyme that destroys certain antibiotics, making it resistant and harder to eliminate. Fortunately, there are still effective treatments to counter it.
Fun fact 💡 : its name “ catarrhalis ” comes from “catarrh,” a somewhat forgotten term that means… nasal discharge . Pretty clever, right?
Now you can adopt it risk-free: Add the Moraxella catarrhalis sticker to your science collection today!
