Small but legendary, Mimas is an icy moon of Saturn that fascinates astronomers… and science fiction fans! With its enormous Herschel crater, over 130 km wide, it bears a striking resemblance to the Death Star from Star Wars, a cosmic coincidence that brings a smile to researchers around the world!
But behind its famous appearance, Mimas hides a very real mystery: beneath its icy, impact-scarred surface, a subterranean ocean of liquid water could be lurking! This would be a major surprise, as Mimas has so far appeared to be nothing more than a frozen ball of ice. If this ocean exists, it would make this small moon a potentially active world, capable of harboring geological phenomena, or even conditions favorable to microbial life.
With a diameter of only 396 kilometers, Mimas is tiny compared to Earth, but its enormous crater gives it a unique character in Saturn's sky. It orbits peacefully around its planet, like a frozen guardian of the shimmering rings.
NEWS FLASH: In Greek mythology, Mimas was a giant, born from Gaia (the Earth) and the blood of Cronus, who castrated Uranus (the Sky). The giants were the second generation of Gaia and Uranus's children, after the Titans. Mimas participated in the famous Gigantomachy, the great war between the Giants and the Olympian gods. He confronted the gods with his colossal strength and ferocity, wielding mountains and flames as weapons. Some sources say he was defeated by Hephaestus (the god of fire and the forge), while others suggest Zeus or Ares were responsible. After his death, his body was buried beneath the island of Prochyta or Vulcano, and earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are attributed to Mimas's wrath beneath the earth.
Mimas proves that you can be tiny… and still iconic! And an equally iconic sticker awaits you on our shop's website!
