Meteorite

Meteorites are true messengers from space : they are fragments of asteroids, planets, or even sometimes the Moon or Mars, which have traveled millions of kilometers to land on Earth.

What makes them unique is that they are among the oldest objects we can touch : some date back more than 4.5 billion years, direct witnesses to the birth of the Solar System. Each meteorite contains valuable clues about how the planets formed, a bit like a cosmic time capsule.

When one of these fragments enters Earth's atmosphere, it becomes a meteor (or "shooting star") and burns up in a burst of light. But if a part survives this blazing descent and hits the ground, it becomes a meteorite.

Some contain iron and nickel, others rare minerals, and sometimes even organic molecules, the building blocks of life ! Every meteorite that fell to Earth tells an interstellar story from billions of years ago.
