Lenticular cloud

Lenticular clouds are among the most elegant in the sky. Shaped like lenses, saucers… or even UFOs, they form when humid air circulates over a landform such as a mountain. As it rises and falls in invisible waves, the air cools, and the water vapor condenses precisely at the crests of these waves, giving rise to these perfectly smooth and motionless clouds, even when the wind is blowing strongly.

Unlike most clouds, lenticular clouds hardly drift: they remain suspended in the same place for hours, continuously reforming at the same point. Their neat, stacked appearance, however, hides a highly turbulent atmosphere around them, making them as fascinating to meteorologists as they are dreaded by pilots.
