Jupiter

It's impossible to miss Jupiter: it's the largest planet in the Solar System, a gaseous colossus so enormous that it could contain more than 1,300 Earths on its own! Its mass is so great that it would be more than double the mass of all the other planets in the Solar System! Made mostly of hydrogen and helium gas, Jupiter has no solid surface; it's a sea of swirling clouds, streaked with titanic storms!

Its most famous symbol? The Great Red Spot, a storm larger than Earth , which has raged for over 300 years without ever dying down! The storm has shrunk significantly since its discovery, its radius decreasing from 3 times the diameter of Earth to about 1x the size of Earth!

Like Saturn, Jupiter has a ring system around it, but unlike its little gaseous sister, this system is thinner and more difficult to observe. And all around the gas giant, a ballet of fascinating moons (Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, among its 95 moons!!) which make Jupiter a veritable mini-solar system in itself.

But Jupiter isn't just a quiet giant: it's also a cosmic shield, whose powerful gravity attracts and deflects comets and asteroids, protecting inner planets like Earth. It's truly the guardian of the inner planets of the Solar System!

NEWS FLASH: This planet's name is inspired by the king of the gods in Roman mythology, Jupiter, who in Greek mythology is called Zeus! Just like the king of the gods, this planet watches over the others! The names of its most famous moons are inspired by the many lovers of Zeus in Greek mythology!
