Iapetus

Iapetus, one of Saturn's moons, looks like it came straight out of a science fiction movie: one half is dark as coal, the other glows a brilliant white ! This striking appearance gives it a cosmic yin and yang feel, a true work of natural art floating in space.

But that's not all: Iapetus also hides a huge equatorial ridge, a gigantic mountain range that goes almost all the way around the moon, as if it were wearing a mountain belt (or in the case of our sticker, a nasty cavity!). Scientists think it formed billions of years ago, perhaps when Iapetus was spinning faster or when an ancient ring collapsed onto its surface.

This extreme contrast between light and dark, between softness and relief, makes Iapetus one of the most intriguing and aesthetically unique moons in the Saturn system.

NEWS FLASH: Like other moons of Saturn, Iapetus is named after one of the first generation of Titans in Greek mythology, father of several legendary Titans like Atlas, Prometheus and Epimetheus! Iapetus participated in the battle against the Olympian gods, alongside Cronus (Saturn in Roman mythology), and was imprisoned in Tartarus by Zeus.
