Among all Saturn's moons, Hyperion stands out for its completely crazy appearance: it looks like a giant sponge floating in space ! Its surface is covered in deep, irregular craters, giving the impression that it has been sculpted by thousands of cosmic shocks.
But that's not all: Hyperion rotates chaotically. Unlike most moons, it never keeps the same side facing Saturn! It swirls unpredictably, like a cork caught in an interstellar torrent.
Its low density indicates that it is full of empty space : about 60% of its structure is just hollow space! This composition makes it one of the strangest and most mysterious objects in the solar system.
NEWS FLASH: Like the other moons of Saturn, Hyperion is inspired by a Titan from Greek mythology. This Titan is associated with celestial light and the fire of the Sun. He is the father of Helios (the Sun), Selene (the Moon), and Eos (the Dawn). Hyperion also fought alongside Cronus (Saturn in Roman mythology) against the Olympian gods and was imprisoned in Tartarus.
In summary: Hyperion is a celestial sponge that defies gravity and logic, a chaotic world that reminds us how full of surprises our universe is!
