The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a virus that attacks the liver, causing an inflammation called hepatitis. Unlike some transient viral infections, it can be either acute (short-lived) or progress to a chronic infection, capable of long-term liver damage. Many people experience no symptoms at first, but when signs appear, they may include fatigue, fever, loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal pain, and sometimes jaundice. In chronic forms, the virus can lead to serious complications such as cirrhosis or liver cancer.

HBV is transmitted through blood and body fluids, particularly during unprotected sexual intercourse, sharing of needles, unsterilized medical equipment, or from mother to child at birth. Once in the body, it infects liver cells and can establish itself there long-term, partly thanks to its unique viral DNA which allows it to persist in cells.

There is no simple cure to completely eliminate the virus in all cases, but antiviral treatments can control the infection, slow liver damage, and allow for a long and healthy life. In acute forms, the body can sometimes eliminate the virus spontaneously. Prevention is essential and relies on very effective means: vaccination, condom use, screening, sterile equipment, and medical follow-up, especially during pregnancy.

From a scientific perspective, HBV is particularly interesting: it is a partially double-stranded DNA virus, surrounded by a lipid envelope, which distinguishes it from many other viruses and partly explains its ability to persist in the body.
