For most of our body's cells to function, they need oxygen (O2). To do this, red blood cells, also called erythrocytes and found in large part in our blood, travel through our blood vessels to the lungs to collect oxygen molecules and deliver them to our body's cells. They then collect the carbon dioxide released by our cells and return it to the lungs to be expelled. Red blood cells are therefore essential for the proper functioning of our cells and organs.
NEWS FLASH: A molecule in red blood cells called hemoglobin, which binds to oxygen, is responsible for their red colour. Hemoglobin contains iron atoms and gives blood its irony taste and smell. Red blood cells lack a nucleus, which makes the cell disc-shaped to be smaller and fit through the smallest blood vessels in our body. It is the red blood cells that determine our blood type and our compatibility to give or receive blood.
Buy a red blood cell sticker today to get them circulating somewhere other than in our blood vessels!
