Deimos

Deimos is one of the two moons of Mars, and it is the smallest and most distant from the red planet, with a diameter of barely 12 km ! What makes it unique is its irregular shape, similar to a large pebble floating in space, and its extremely smooth surface, covered with regolith (rocks, pebbles, dust) and craters.

Unlike many other moons, Deimos moves very quickly across the Martian sky, sometimes appearing to streak by like a shooting star seen from Mars. Scientists believe this moon may be a captured asteroid, a small witness to the Solar System's dynamic past.

FUN FACT: Deimos is the god of terror in Greek mythology, known to inspire irrational fear in foes. He is the son of Ares (Mars) and Aphrodite (Venus), and the brother of Phobos.
