Chlamydia trachomatis is the bacteria responsible for one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in humans: chlamydia ! This infection, often silent, is easily transmitted from one person to another. Its symptoms, when they appear, result in abdominal pain and burning during urination. And its only target? Humans!
If left untreated, this secretive bacterium can lead to serious complications, including infertility in women. But that's not all: C. trachomatis can also cause trachoma, an eye infection that can lead to blindness.
A fastidious bacterium, Chlamydia trachomatis cannot multiply on its own. It must infect our cells to hijack their internal machinery ! Once established in the mucous membranes (urethra, cervix, rectum, throat, or even eyes), it begins its infection discreetly... often evading the body's initial defenses.
Fortunately, effective antibiotic treatment exists! This is why it is essential to have regular screenings and to protect yourself during intercourse (especially with multiple partners), by using a condom.
FUN FACT : This small, cocci -shaped bacterium (tiny ball) multiplies in a vacuole inside the cell, which swells so much that it pushes the cell nucleus against the wall. A real squatter!
And if you want to catch it safely? Adopt the scientific Chlamydia trachomatis sticker : discreet, original, and totally harmless! π¦ π¬π
