Borrelia burgdorferi is a spiral-shaped bacterium classified as a spirochete . It is infamous for causing Lyme disease, an infection that can affect the entire body: starting as a simple skin rash, it can progress to muscle pain, joint problems, and even nerve disorders if left untreated.
This bacteria is transmitted through the bite of infected ticks. Once installed in the tick's intestine, B. burgdorferi causes it to regurgitate... thus injecting the bacteria during the bite. Clever, right?
One of the typical signs of Lyme disease? A red, target-shaped circle that appears around the bite: a warning signal not to be ignored! Fortunately, if detected early, the disease can be effectively treated with antibiotics.
(Not so) FUN FACT : With global warming, ticks are expanding their territory northward, increasing the risk of bites in areas that were previously unaffected. It's therefore better to stay vigilant and protect yourself when walking in the forest!
