Discovered in 2023, Ammonite (also known as 2023 KQ14) is a mysterious celestial body lurking at the icy edges of our Solar System. Its nickname is no accident: just like terrestrial ammonite fossils, this tiny world is an almost intact relic of the cosmic past, preserved for over 4 billion years!
Located tens of billions of kilometers from the Sun, Ammonite orbits in an incredibly distant and elongated path, far beyond Neptune. At its closest point to the Sun, it is about 66 astronomical units (66 times the Earth-Sun distance), while at its farthest point, it is 425 astronomical units away! Its trajectory classifies it among the "sednoids," a very rare family of trans-Neptunian objects. With an estimated diameter between 220 and 380 km, it is tiny compared to the large planets, but immense for such an isolated object.
What makes it unique? Its orbit and age make it a true fossil of the early Solar System : a fragment of matter that has remained almost unchanged since the birth of the planets. By studying Ammonite, astronomers hope to trace the thread of time and perhaps even solve one of the greatest mysteries of our time: the existence of the famous Planet Nine.
FLASH NEWS: The name of the fossils "Ammonite" is derived from the god Ammon, the king of the gods in Egyptian mythology, since he was depicted with ram's horns.
Ammonite is a symbol of patience and cosmic mystery, a tiny trace of the past drifting slowly through the interstellar night. Difficult to observe as a sednoid, easy and beautiful to see as a sticker! And by the way, the sticker is now available on our website!
