Adenoviruses (groups A to G) form a large family of widespread viruses capable of infecting various parts of the body. Robust and non-enveloped, they survive for a long time on surfaces, which facilitates their transmission. Depending on the type, they can cause respiratory infections (colds, bronchitis), conjunctivitis, gastroenteritis, or urinary tract infections. In most people, symptoms remain moderate (fever, cough, sore throat, eye irritation, or digestive problems) but can be more severe in young children or immunocompromised individuals.

They are easily transmitted through respiratory droplets, direct contact, or via contaminated surfaces and water (such as certain swimming pools). Once in the body, they infect cells to multiply, triggering the immune response that causes symptoms. There is generally no specific treatment: the body eliminates the virus over time, and care primarily aims to alleviate symptoms (rest, hydration). In more severe cases, antivirals may be used under medical supervision.

Groups A to G are primarily distinguished by the types of infections they cause: group A is often associated with gastroenteritis in children, group B with respiratory and urinary infections, group C with common respiratory infections in children, group D with conjunctivitis (especially in swimming pools), group E is rarer but linked to respiratory infections, group F is well-known for causing infant diarrhea, and group G is still uncommon but being studied for its potential role in certain digestive infections.

Prevention relies on simple measures: hand washing, surface disinfection, avoiding sharing personal items, and maintaining good hygiene in public places.

Fascinating in their diversity and resistance, adenoviruses are a must-know in modern virology. Add the adenovirus sticker to your collection and let these survival experts settle… only on your notebooks!
